On Tuesday, February 10, we came together with GLIDE Foundation to celebrate Founding President Janice Mirikitani’s birthday. This year, Jan held her birthday party at French/Vietnamese fusion restaurant, Le Colonial, located in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed beverages and light passed appetizers, including Goi Cuon (prawn spring rolls), Cha Gio Tom Cua (crispy Dungeness crab rolls), and truffle sweet potato fries, as well as a custom-made vanilla cake with strawberries, especially for Jan.
The party was attended by over 150 guests, including GLIDE Board Members and Jan’s close friends. Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr., Renel Brooks-Moon, public announcer of the San Francisco Giants, and a number other GLIDE supporters also made an appearance. The evening’s program included a musical number and dance from Brenda Wong Aoki and Mark Izu of First Voice, as well as powerful, moving spoken word pieces by Caitlyn Clark and Haroun (Tizzy) Tisgar of Youth Speaks. The famous GLIDE Ensemble and Change Band dedicated their famous pieces – “I’m Blessed,” “Hold On,” and “Love Brought Me Back” – to Jan in their characteristic passionate songs. Tom Johnston, who sang a musical number to celebrate Jan’s birthday, concluded the evening’s festivities as everyone sang happy birthday to Jan.
Another successful event with GLIDE, we look forward to celebrating with Jan again next year. Happy Birthday, Jan!
